Outer space
The outer space crazy started first in 1999, there have been previous games based on outer space themes, however, the first RTS full scale game of space that caught the public imagination was Homeworld. It captivated a new age of inspiration which pushed game developers like CCP and Stardock to create and Relic again to pursue Homeworld 2.
As it works out, these games all won awards for creating complicated yet lovable and enjoyable experience. As we’d all imagine, space is complicated, simple controls and just a few buttons would ruin the experience and the excitement of running a 100 things at one time. The one that takes the edge of immersing the player in a complex system with endless stars to explore and endless things to be done starts at EVE (CCP). It had the flexibility of resorting to multi-linear approach if you may say, unlike linear approaches of World of Warcraft, EVE has taken a 10 step leap where you can explore, build, form organisations, carry out mass attacks against designated enemy zones.
This seemed to work very well with the endless approach of the imaginary endless space. This could be a couple of reasons why space age games have made a fan following of the millions. Doesn’t matter if space doesn’t have it support london , it can be lived by these perfectly replicated images of how we would expect the future - say year 3000 would look like. These perfectly crafted games have the imagination of artists and following of million consumers, that just equals BIG MONEY.
